Enoploteuthis semilineata Alexeyev 1994

Kotaro Tsuchiya
Containing group: Enoploteuthis

Introduction

Enoploteuthis semilineata is known only from central South Pacific waters. This species closely resembles the North Pacific species E. chuni and the Australian-New Zealand species E. galaxias in the photophore arrangements.

Characteristics

  1. Tentacle
    1. Tentacle long, with distinct club.
    2. Carpal cluster oval.
    3. Two rows of different-sized hooks on manus.
    4. Four rows of suckers on dactylus.

  2. Hectocotylus
    1. Mature hectocotylus not described.

  3. Integumental Photophores
    1. Ventral mantle with six longitudinal stripes of integumental organs that become diffuse posteiorly.
    2. Ventral head with scattered integumental organs.
    3. Ventral side of arm III with a row of organs along almost entire length.

Comment

The taxonomic status with respect to the Australian-New Zealand species, E. galaxias is uncertain. The difference in apparent photophore arrangement could be due to growth. Growth-related changes are known to occur in at least E. chuni.

Distribution

Geographical distribution

This species is known only from the mixed waters of subantarctic frontal zone in central southern Pacific (Alexeyev, 1994a).

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
