Introduction

The original description of Gonatopsis okutanii by Nesis (1972) was based on a holotype and 4 paratypes plus reference to another specimen described by Okutani (1967) and a brief description by Okiyama (1969) of an animal represented in 2 photographs. All appear to be spent females.

The species was later considered by Nesis (1987, 1997) to represent spent females of Gonatus madokai. Okutani (2005), in contrast, treats Gonatopsis okutanii as a valid species because it is much smaller at maturity than G. madokai (25 vs 44 cm ML). In addition, the fins of G. madokai are larger and the arms shorter than G. okutanii. Nesis (1972) found remnants of tentacles in the spent female types of G. okutanii which we now know indicates that prior to sexual maturity the squid had tentacles and therefore does not belong in Gonatopsis. In addition, O. Katugin (personal communication) recently found large Eogonatus tinro in the size range of G. okutanii, and he suspects that G. okutanii is a junior synonym of E. tinro.

Clearly the status of G. okutanii is in limbo but we retain it here until evidence for its correct position is available.

  5. Mantle
    1. Mantle thick, but soft and gelatinous (all specimens are spent females).
    2. Mantle length of holotype 18 cm; other specimens reported to 25 cm.
    3. Mantle cone-shaped; tapered posteriorly.
    4. Skin color dark purplish; eye "patches" present.

Comments

Characteristics listed above are taken from Nesis (1972) and Okutani (1967).

Hatchlings and paralarvae are not known for this species.

Life History

The species is reported to have relatively large eggs, to copulate "head to head", and adult females do not appear to die after the first spawning (Nesis, 1972).

Distribution

Type Locality: Western North Pacific Ocean off Russia at 44°06.4'N, 150°28.2'E; depth of capture 525-550 m.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
