Containing group: Greya

Adult Characteristics

Adult depicted in Davis et al (1992). A relatively small Greya species, wing expanse of 11-13 mm. Forewings with a dark brown base, and two pale tan-colored patches from hind margin to near costal margin. Hindwings slightly lighter than forwewings, without pattern. The number of available specimens is too small to determine whether males are larger than females, as is the case in other Greya species.

Comparison with Similar Species

No other species approaches the general habitus of G. variata.

Host, Oviposition, and Larval Feeding Habits

Osmorhiza occidentalis (Apiaceae) is a suspected host, based on adult resting site and extraction of unidentified Greya larvae.

Geographic Distribution

Only known from the type locality in the central Rocky Mountains at the USA-Canada border. Elevation 1200-1400 m.

Habitat

Occurring in herb-rich meadows and along forest edges.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
