Characteristics

Myrmoteras has the following apomorphies (Bolton 2003):

Eyes enormous
Linear and extremely elongate mandibles, with 8-16 teeth; trap-jaws, capable of opening to 270 degrees
Frontal carinae absent, antennal sockets bounded only by toruli
Vertical posterior surface of head with a transverse groove and thick cuticular collar above the occiput
