This territory overlaps with the Sahel region of Africa; a semi-arid savanna region south of the Sahara. Struthio camelus massaicus occupies a region to the south-east of the Sahel, near Kenya. Struthio camelus australis (red) has an independent distribution in southern Africa, south of the Zambezi and Cunene rivers. Struthio molybdophanes is restricted to the Somali peninsula.
