Preparing Text and Figures for Others to Compose

For many authors it is most convenient to have the HTML files for their pages created by us. If you would like us to compose your pages for you in ToL-MacClade, please contact us at treegrow@ag.arizona.edu.

The best way to submit your contribution to us is to simply send an MSWord file with your manuscript as an e-mail attachment. We will then cut and paste your text into a ToL-MacClade data file, and we will implement any special formatting you indicate. If you don't know how to send files as e-mail attachments, please contact treegrow@ag.arizona.edu for technical help. Tell us what e-mail software you are using (pine, Eudora, Outlook Express, etc.), and we will send you detailed instructions.

Before submitting any materials, you should carefully read the information on Planning Your Tree of Life Pages. Please be sure to organize your text in standard Tree of Life sections (as described on the page about Design of a Branch Page). That is, make sure you have a basic Introduction, followed by a section on Characteristics, Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships, and References, with other sections added as appropriate for your group and interests. You should also pay close attention to the General Principles of Page Design.

References should be written in the style used by Systematic Biology and should each be one (and only one) paragraph. That is, place only one carriage return at the end of each reference and none within a reference, and use no tabs or indents. So a reference might look like this on your submission:

DOE, J. 1996. Phylogenetic analysis of the little-toed slime creepers of Borneo, based on molecular analysis of their secretions. J. Syst. Creep. 4:311-567.

Any figures should be clearly indicated in the text of your document where they are to appear. Figures could be submitted either on paper, as photographic slides, or as electronic images, depending upon the resources of the composer. If you need help digitizing you images, please contact us at treegrow@ag.arizona.edu. Also, if you would like to include illustrations that have previously been published or that were produced by other people, please also see page about Copyright Issues.

The phylogeny or classification shown on your page can be submitted as a separate illustration; if an electronic text version is not provided, then you should include a list of the terminal taxa for the page in your electronic submission.

Before submission, make sure you have looked over the page on Submitting Tree of Life Pages for Publication to see if you are ready to submit.
