A key to the species of Aspidoras is available in Nijssen & Isbrücker (1976) who also presented figures of all species (except A. virgulatus, which is described and figured in Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1980).
The genus Aspidoras is diagnosed by the possession of a supraoccipital fossa; an extremely reduced frontal fontanel; and by having the ossified portion of the pectoral- and dorsal-fin spines short (about half long as the first branched ray).
The species of Aspidoras are distributed in northeastern and central Brazil, in the states of Ceará, Maranhão, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Espírito Santo.
